Food Waste

Harris Tobias offers an innovative and alternative solutions option to food manufacturers.

We are able to handle a variety of waste streams from retail packaged product through to surplus raw materials / ingredients. We are also able to offer solutions for effluent sludges and bulk liquid wastes.

We work within the Waste Hierarchy framework and therefore look to maximise the ‘re-use’ potential once a product has been classified as ‘waste’ by the producer.

An example of this is out of date margarine which can be reused to produce animal feed.

We can offer a wide variety of services to the food manufacturer in order to produce a bespoke package that works around there own operating system and environmental & CSR objectives.

We focus on providing a zero to landfill solutions which means that we look to find the best fit solution for the product. We use a variety of disposal methods if the product cannot be reprocessed to produce a reuse opportunity. Some of the disposal methods that we use are as follows:

• Anaerobic Digestion

• Composting

• Land injection

• Rendering

• Energy from Waste

In the case of ‘retail packaged’ product we ensure that that all materials pass through a process of secure destruction which ensure that the product cannot be returned to the market. This therefore means that the brand identity is preserved. In such cases a ‘Certificate of Destruction’ would be issued.

A few examples of the material that we have recycled to date are shown below:

Pasta, Cooking Sauces, Snack Pots, Crisps, Fruit Juices, Coffee, Cheese, Mayonnaise,Ice Cream, Margarine, Milk, Starch

From the list you can see that there is also no restriction on packaging as this may range from Tetra Paks to Glass Jars, Plastic bottles to Cellophane wrap.

A couple of examples of the full process for waste streams are shown below:
